Position / speed determination

In order to determine the position and speed of an object 2, for instance a horse on a racetrack, the object carries a receiver 8. Mound the racetrack are transmitting antennas 14, 15, 16. Every third antenna 14 is connected to signal source 4, which is an ultra-wide band code generator. Every third antenna 15 is connected to similar source 5, and every third antenna 16 is connected to source 6. Receiver 8 determines the closest transmitting antenna, and hence approximate position (since the starting position is known). Receiver 8 also determines the difference in arrival time (DTOA) of signals from the closest transmitting aerials, from which the position may be determined more accurately, either at the horse or at a fixed station 9. Signals defining the position are transmitted from the horse to the fixed station, and onwards to users via the internet 21. Alternatively, the transmitter may be on the horse and the receiver may be fixed.
