De-Icing Strategies in Different Stages for Transmission Lines

The overview of ice coating disaster on transmission lines can be summerized into 3 stages: I, ice accumulating on the windward side of the conductors; II, ice sleeve; III, ice damage. This paper has analyzed the characteristics of the three stages and the technologies of on-load network de-icing (ONDI) and HVDC-based de-icing to prevent the damage caused by ice accumulation. A framework for ice disaster prevention is designed and the function of the alert information infrastructure is introduced. The de-icer installments, which need to be designed and operated under certain constraint conditions are described at the end of this paper.
