Mapping of IEC 61850 to Data Distribute Service for Smart Substation Communication

Smart substation is a key component of smart grid and requires real-time and reliable data communication. As a communication standard for smart substation,IEC 61850 has not defined details of how to implement special communication protocols, which causes difficulties such as variation of mapping,non-standardization and complexity of implementation. To remedy those mentioned shortcomings of IEC61850 model, defects of traditional manufacturing message specification(MMS) based mapping, and the closed coupling of client/server based middleware, this paper proposes a novel data distribution service(DDS) and fully publish/subscribe based methodology to implement the abstract communication service interface(ACSI) of the IEC61850.As DDS provides comprehensive Quality of Service(QoS),it is suitable for applications with critical requirement of real-time data communication. The middleware that fulfills the DDS specifications is adopted as the mapping tool, and the real mapping model is designed in detail.Furthermore, according to the requirements of the power engineering, the standard implementation procedures of IEC 61850 are also obtained.Comparing with other types of middleware based mapping method, such as CORBA-TAO,the proposed DDS-based middleware can provide a simple, fast and standardized realization. Finally,a real-time communication simulation system for smart substation was set up to test real-time performance and reliability of the proposed method.
