dents from the other castes. Very low values of the intra-class correlations, however, suggested that differences were not so great when compared with differences within castes. When matched for fathers' occupation, the differences in the mean achievement of the students from the different castes did not turn out to be statistically significant. This suggests that the comparatively poorer performance of the students belonging to Scheduled Castes was probably due to their poorer economic condition and not to any inherent differences in the castes.
