This paper presents the conduct of a pilot project to investigate the effectiveness of electronic annotation and the marking of coursework submitted online by Students studying on an Engineering Masters course. In the first stage of the pilot project, the coursework was marked and commented upon electronically to provide feedback to Students. During the second stage of the pilot project a comparison was made of the effectiveness of the feedback provided to Students when different techniques were used for commenting on their coursework. Embedded audio comments were found to be very effective in providing feedback to the Students, possibly in conjunction with the use of an electronic notepad, such as Pen Tablet. When text-based comments were used, the Students preferred typewritten comments in preference to electronic handwritten comments.
