MQFD: a model for synergising TPM and QFD

One of the strategies that have been subject to wide implementation and research is Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). TPM principles have been formulated by incorporating Total Quality Management (TQM) principles in maintenance quality engineering concepts. One of the TQM strategies that are missing in the TPM model is the infusing of customers' voice for effecting continuous maintenance quality improvement. While the TQM field has been attaining this strategy using the technique Quality Function Deployment (QFD), there has been no evidence of the TPM field's employing this technique. In order to obtain synergic effects of TPM and QFD principles, in this paper a model titled Maintenance Quality Function Deployment (MQFD) has been proposed. The paper examines the literature in the field, the results of which indicate the absence of any model linking QFD and TPM. The conceptual features of the MQFD model are presented, followed by an illustration of its implementation in a hypothetical company.
