Two-Stage Preamble Detection Scheme for IR-UWB Coexistence

Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a promising physical layer technology which potentially enables low power and low cost devices with applications for a wireless body area network (WBAN). A WBAN is a network with its communications devices in very close proximity to the human body and consists of a number of different sensor and actuator nodes. In this paper, a two-stage preamble detection algorithm is proposed in order to improve the coexistence of WBAN nodes in an impulse radio UWB based network. In the multi-stage process, a tentative detection during the first stage is taken into consideration to refine the overall detection performance at the next stage. A method for selecting the decision threshold parameters in each detection stage is also highlighted. We show via simulations that the proposed detection algorithm endowed with adaptive threshold calibration is capable of robustly detecting new incoming nodes against the variation of SNR.
