Modeling fuel consumption and vehicle emissions for the TravTek system

The primary focus of the TravTek route guidance system is to assist drivers in their travel through the Greater Orlando Area and to reduce the amount of delay and traffic congestion they incur. The most important steps that were taken to develop a combined fuel consumption and vehicle emissions prediction model for estimating the network- and city-wide impacts of a TravTek type of system are summarized. An initial set of regression models was first developed using actual fuel consumption data that were collected directly using the TravTek vehicle in Orlando. Subsequently, data from the literature, EPA fuel consumption ratings, and MOBILE5A vehicle emission predictions were combined to generalize these initial vehicle specific models. The generalized models predict fuel consumption and emission rates of HC, CO and NO/sub x/ for all types of commercially available passenger cars when they are making trips at various ambient temperatures, and for either hot or cold start scenarios.
