ITS AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS

Can the use of automated detection devices at street intersections enhance pedestrian safety? A recent study undertaken at the University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center indicated that such devices, used in conjunction with the standard pedestrian pushbutton, resulted in fewer vehicle-pedestrian conflicts and a reduction in the number pedestrians beginning to cross the intersection during the DON'T WALK phase. As part of the study video data were collected at intersections in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Rochester, NY.
