Moving and Handling Patients: An evaluation of current training for physiotherapy students

Summary Final-year students in 12 undergraduate courses were surveyed by postal questionnaire to determine characteristics of the theoretical, practical and clinical training in lifting and handling of patients they had received. The responses of 85 students in 11 courses indicate that training was adequate but there were discrepancies in the topics covered and the extent of clinical practice and support, and 27% reported that they had experienced low back pain after handling patients. The results imply that both content and setting of tuition need to be assessed and improved in order to minimise occupational back pain among physiotherapists.
