Evolution of a dynamic seat test standard proposal for a better protection after rear-end impact

Current car seats are designed with respect to ergonomics, production and cost efficiency, but in many cases not for protection in a low speed rear-end impact. The Institute of Vehicle Safety of the German Insurance Association (GDV) therefore funded different seat test series, where a dynamic seat test standard protocal has been worked out. This standard has already been discussed at International Standards Organization (ISO) and should be implemented in future regulations to improve the protection of the occupant. Currently, the ISO/TC22/SC10/WG1 is in the process of developing criteria for a dynamic test standard. At the moment, one test procedure should test the performance of the seat at delta V (velocity change) 15 km/h and a mean acceleration of 6 g, with an additional test at delta V 10 km/h. Two test series with a total number of 24 tests mainly conducted at 15 km/h were carried out in which it clearly turned out that many seats show significant safety deficiencies.
