Abstract: Developments in digital technologies and microelectronics provide children with opportunities to access the
online environment and interact with others in new and increasingly creative ways. The potential for such industry is,
however, accompanied by the possibility for harm. Developing an awareness of and resilience to online risk for children
and young people requires that teachers become a focal point for delivering the online safety message. As part of the
Initial Teacher Training (ITT) of primary practitioners, it is therefore necessary to address these issues and provide
appropriate opportunities for student teachers to develop their knowledge, understanding and expertise in online safety
in order to recognise how they might undertake a critical role in pupils’ developing understanding of staying safe when
exploring the online environment. This small-scale research project therefore seeks to examine the awareness,
understanding and perceptions of primary postgraduate students with regard to online risk with a view to informing the
design and development of an appropriate programme of learning for ITT
