Twenty years after the Britannia Bridge was opened in 1850, engineers and theoreticians became interested in how to treat continuous beam structures over multiple supports. This is a reproduction of the historical paper On the Theory of Continuous Beams by John Mortimer Heppel, communicated by Professor W. J. Macquorn Rankine to an audience at the ICE in 1869.
