Multiple-Symbol Detection for Practical SPAD-Based VLC System with Experimental Proof

The single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) receivers are used for long-distance transmission owing to the high sensitivity and high detection efficiency. However, the dead time caused by the quenching circuit makes the output of practical SPAD devices are not Poisson distributed. In this paper, after considering the dead time effect, we first propose the multiple-symbol detection (MSD) theory for the SPAD-based visible light communication (VLC) system. In addition, we design a weak light communication experiment system with a red light-emitting diode (LED) status indicator and a practical SPAD device. After passing a 3 m free space transmission distance, the experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms the well-established dead time-free Poisson photon-counting communication method.
