Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Carpet Yarns and Carpet Performance

Dynamic mechanical properties of commercial nylon, polyester and polypropylene carpet yarns are measured with a Rheovibron, and the tan δ] values are used as a measure of yarn resiliency. The effects of fiber drawing, fiber crimp, yarn structure, yam heat setting, and moisture on yarn resiliency and modulus as measured by the Rheovibron are investigated. In this exploratory study, dynamic mechanical mea surements on carpet pile yarns are compared with carpet appearance retention per formance. Rheovibron measurements of yarn resiliency may be related to carpet ap pearance retention during the initial stages of carpet walkout.
