Developing the facilitator role in the clinical area.

This paper concerns the nature of nursing knowledge, with a focus on the model of 'learning and working' which is predominant for learning nursing. The diminished role of the clinical teacher and the difficulties associated with clinical teaching are discussed. The search for effective teachers to promote learning in the practice setting has moved from ward sisters to clinical teachers to the notion of mentors/facilitators. Some strategies to enhance clinical teaching are noted and there is some evidence to suggest that staff nurses are key personnel to facilitate learning in the ward.
