Hydroxamic Acids as a Reductometric Titrants: Determination of Cerium in Alloys

Hydroxamic acids like acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) and oxalohydroxamic acid (OHA) have been employed as a reductometric titrant for the determination of cerium in 2 N sulphuric acid. Stoichiometry of the reaction is established. One mole of AHA and OHA were found to consume 6.0 and 12.0 equivalents of the oxidant respectively in these reactions. The titre values are obtained by second derivative plots of potentiometric titrations.
