The Pangaean reptile, Lystrosaurus maccaigi, in the Lower Triassic of Antarctica

TWO cranial portions of the anomodont species, Lystrosaurus maccaigi, from the Lower Triassic Fremouw Formation of Antarctica are described. Taxonomy of the genus is discussed and it is concluded that L. maccaigi is a valid species. Distribution of the species of Lystrosaurus over the Pangaean Continent is examined and is found to be consistent with the view that a single, rather uniform, vertebrate community was ubiquitous over most-of the available terrestrial habitat of the time. The Lystrosaurus complex was an important ecologic component of this community.
