Cultural cycles in Central Europe during the Holocene

Abstract Cultural cycles in this paper are understood as a special case of adaptive cycles as described by Gunderson and Holling. The existence of such cultural cycles in European prehistory is well known. However, the potential of such (century long) cycles to improve understanding of mobility structures in sedentary societies is only now becoming visible.
