Optimal Operation of an Irrigation Canal System for Unsteady Flow Conditions

The operation of the major irrigation canal systems gives occasion for many unsteady flow conditions, especially at the starting/stoping of the pumping devices placed along the canal network. As a consequence, the water depth may be a strongly time-dependent parameter. In some circumstances, certain undesired values may be attained at various cross-sections (e.g. -below the intake levels, above the embankment levels etc.). On the other hand, it is of great importance to assure an imposed irrigation schedule using the smallest energy consumption at the pumping station responsible for the water supply within the canals system.
