Reliability Based Design Criteria for Coastal and Ocean Structures

The application of reliability methods in development of design criteria for coastal and ocean structures is described and illustrated. Basic reliability engineering principles are outlined. These principles are illustrated in development of design criteria for an offshore oil and gas drilling and production platform. The paper concludes with an evaluation of limitations and challenges of reliability based approaches.
