Port terminals, though only a small link in the overall transportation system of a country, play a vital role in the overall system efficiency. At port or inland distribution centres, terminals act as transportation links and as buffers between the two transportation modes. In analysing current container movements in Australia, the authors will seek to identify the efficiencies of distribution centres in the form of multimodal planning. The paper will also discuss on ship-to-rail direct loading leading to the need for more efficiency in port terminals, port management and land transport network.
