FDTD Simulation on Array Antenna SAR-GPR for Land Mine Detection

Publisher Summary This chapter presents the preliminary result of the FDTD simulations of the SAR-GPR performance which were carried out in order to confirm a hypothesis that had been drawn from the result of laboratory experiments. A SAR-GPR is expected to be an effective alternative method to a metal detector in the detection of anti-personnel mines. Laboratory experiments of mine detection SAR-GPR is conducted under dry condition and its 3D-FDTD simulation. Despite the difference of antenna design, the FDTD simulation well reproduces the variation of the SAR-GPR performance as a function of antenna spacing, which is observed in the laboratory experiments. From comparison of laboratory experiments and FDTD simulations, the chapter concludes that the antenna spacing is an essential factor in the SAR-GPR performance and that there is an optimal antenna spacing of the antenna array depending on the ground surface roughness.
