Structural Texture Analysis Applications

Abstract : This paper presents a discussion of two applications of the results of a structural texture analysis system 8. The details of the basic analysis procedure will not be presented in this report. The procedures to generate basic descriptions of natural textures are described in 1-2. The extraction and description of texture elements is described in 3. The final determination of relations (placement rules) and the 4-5. Short descriptions of these programs can also be found in 6-7. The goal of the symbolic analysis program was to produce a description of a texture pattern which is similar to the type of descriptions produced by human observers. The description is based on the appearance and placement of elementary texture primitives. These descriptions can be used for reconstruction of the pattern, for recognition of the input pattern, and for analysis of texture gradients for determination of surface orientations. The last two topics are described in this report.
