Interpreting the Theory of Functional Discourse Grammar

Functional Discourse Grammar(FDG) is the newest achievement of Functional Linguistics,a theory about grammar which integrates both formalism and functionalism.FDG bases its analysis on the basic unit of discourse act and organizes the dis-course formation and encoding into four hierarchical levels with adequate consideration of pragmatic, semantic and grammatical constituents which can be mapped on different levels through mapping rules.FDG seeks to provide a framework for the inner dis-course structure of various linguistic units as well as a reasonable way to describe and explain two problems of present functional linguistic research.
