Inter-provenance Variation of Eucalyptus maculata Hook Grown in Zambia

SUMMARY Thirteen provenances of E. maculata and one of E. citriodora were grown to an age of three years in a trial on the Copperbelt of Zambia. Growth, leaf size, and other characteristics were measured and analysed statistically for differences between provenances, and to investigate whether such differences were systematically related to the geographical source of the provenances. Wide differences were found between some of the provenances particularly in leaf size and shape but these differences did not show a geographical trend. The most atypical provenances were those from Grafton and Richmond in New South Wales and that from Mt. Tara, Victoria. E. citriodora displayed leaf characteristics which differed markedly from typical E. maculata.
