Graphite Nanosheets: Thermal Treatment Synthesis and Characterization

In this research, the authors report the preparation of graphite nanosheets via thermal reduction of graphite oxide (GO) in presence of Ar gas. The GO as an intermediate compound were synthesized through the oxidation of graphite powders by H2SO4, HNO3, KMnO4, and H2O2. The effect of temperature and reduction time was studied in synthesis of the final products. The optimum reduction temperature to form graphite nanosheets was 900°C because the graphite nanosheets were individually exfoliated at temperature around 900°C. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the products. It was found that the temperature and reduction time were confirmed to be the crucial factors in removal of oxygen functional groups from surface of graphite oxide.
