A brief review of intermodal transportation

This paper focuses on Intermodal Freight Transportation broadly defined as a chain made up of several transportation modes that are more or less coordinated and interact in intermodal terminals to ensure door-to-door service. The goal of the chapter is to present intermodal transportation from both the supplier and the carrier perspectives, and identify important issues and challenges in designing, planning, and operating intermodal transportation networks, focusing on modeling and the contributions of operations research to the field.
