The theory of imperialism has always been one of the stronger aspects of marxism, and some of the new applications o f it in the context of the “ development dilemma” in the contemporary world represent one o f the intellectual features of the times. Many conventional scholars recognize its importance, and some have been influenced by the approach. If conservative “ modernization” theory still holds sway in Western universities, it is largely due to institutional constraints rather than any theoretical vitality; indeed, it has all the appearances o f being a burnt out case.
