Next Place Prediction using Mobile Data

Recently, location-based applications and services for mobile users have attracted signicant attention. In this context, one challenging problem is predicting the future location of a mobile user given his or her current location and associated metadata. Solving this problem enables many interesting applications such as location-aware mobile advertisements, trac warnings, etc. In this paper, we present an approach based on user-specic decision trees learned from each user’s history. The classication tree is built based on simple, intuitive features with some mobile data-specic enhancements. We demonstrate the performance of our approach by evaluating with a real-life dataset provided by Nokia, and show that it outperforms a simpler baseline.
