A Fuzzy Logic Application for Traffic Actuated Signal Control

Abstract The application of fuzzy control for a phase oriented traffic actuated signal control for individual and public traffic is described. The design of the controller is supported by microscopic traffic simulation of a real inner city junction with numerous traffic flows and priority of public traffic. The proposed fuzzy controller determines whether to terminate or to extend the current phase and selects the transition to the next phase of the signal control. The simulation results were compared to actually implemented control techniques. The optimised fuzzy controller was implemented into a microcontroller system due to provide a flexible base for real time applications.
