Spectrophotometric determination of serum iron at the submicrogram level with a new reagent (ferrozine).

Abstract The application of ferrozine, a commercially available sulfonated ferroin, to the determination of submicrogram levels of iron in human serum is described. The effect of serum copper, which can be a potential source of error, is minimized by complexation with neocuproin in the reaction mixture without affecting adherence to Beer's Law. The large molar absorptivity of 28,000 for the iron-ferrozine complex makes the ligand an attractive color reagent for monitoring iron therapy in anemic patients.
