Using Portfolios for Teacher Hiring: Insights from School Principals

Abstract This case study of a mid-sized urban school district's teacher selection practices sheds light on whether and how preservice teaching portfolios are being used for initial job acquisition. This research explores the perspectives of school principals to expand the know ledge base. Findings from the case center on three interrelated questions: What forms do teacher interview portfolios take? What meaning do principals make of them? And how, if at all, are portfolios being used in deciding whom to hire? Discussion of findings concludes by identifying implications for teacher education programs.
