Laparoscopically Applied Hemoclips for Tubal Sterilization

A tubal occlusion device to replace electrocoagulation for the purpose of female sterilization is needed because of the small, but persistent, risk of electrocoagulation injuries, as shown in reported series of laparoscopy sterilizations. The standard hemoclip was tested in 52 patients in an attempt to achieve permanent sterilization. The complication rate was extremely small. However, the pregnancy rate following this procedure was in excess of 10%. It was concluded that the application of two standard hemoclips without transection of the fallopian tube was insufficient to produce satisfactory tubal sterilization.
