Visual Feature Integration in a World of Objects

rather than being in opposition, the analytic and holistic approaches to perception complement each other. Veridical object recognition depends not only on the perception of features, but also on combining features correctly. How features are combined has been largely determined by principles enumerated by the Gestalt school.
