This research analyzed the concept of fuel economy in power split and parallel hybrid electric vehicles and the role of various environmental conditions. The results compared the fuel economy of both internal combustion vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. The vehicles were tested under various temperatures to help determine the effect of each seasonal change in weather. Actual road tests were done on both city roads and expressways. City road conditions were defined by average vehicle speed, ambient temperature, and distance, while expressway conditions were defined by ambient temperature and distance. The results showed that all the vehicles provided better fuel economy when they were going above average speeds. Distance did not affect fuel economy in the expressways. A power split hybrid vehicle would be more affected by the air conditioning system compared to the parallel hybrid vehicle. The total annual fuel savings showed the effects of the power split hybrid vehicle at 27 ~ 29 %, while the parallel hybrid vehicle was at 25 ~ 35 %.
