Performance analysis of BLDC motor drive with power factor correction scheme

This paper presents the analysis, design and comparison of performance of a scheme for power factor correction for the brushless dc motor drive. A front end diode bridge rectifier (DBR) with dc link capacitor at the input side of brushless dc motor (BLDC) draws peaky current which then leads to high value of Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) and poor power factor. This problem can be eliminated by connecting a diode bridge rectifier together with dc- dc converter for improving power factor. A variable dc link voltage output from the converter with constant switching frequency based voltage source inverter reduces switching losses. This paper compares the performance of different types of front end converters for Brushless dc motor drive based on its THD and power factor correction. A Power factor corrected (PFC) bridgeless buck-boost converter operating in discontinuous mode of inductor current improves the power factor of ac mains. The performance of the proposed drive is evaluated over a wide range of speeds.
