American Liver Foundation

The American Liver Foundation is a new nonprofit tax-exempt organization that seeks to improve the understanding, prevention, and cure of liver diseases. Although liver diseases are among the top seven major causes of death in the United States, they did not previously have a national public spokesman. The fight against the nation's top three killers-heart disease, cancer, and stroke--has been led by two well-known lay organizations: the American Heart Association (established in 1924) and the American Cancer Society (established in 1913). Regrettably, there was no national voluntary health agency devoted exclusively to combating liver diseases until 1976 when the American Liver Foundation was formed.
