CONSTRUCTION ZONE BARREL EVALUATION

This report summarizes the survey procedures, results, and conclusions from a survey of construction zone barrels. A total of approximately 1700 barrels were examined on 14 construction contracts in Regions 1, 2, 8, and 9. These contracts provide a representative sample of construction projects across the state, but located to minimize travel time. All 14 projects were examined in detail during the daytime, and 7 of the 14 were inspected at night. Evaluation parameters included: detailed barrel characteristics; sheeting type and pattern; physical condition of barrels and reflective sheeting; cleanliness of reflective sheeting; barrel function and spacing; flasher location and connection method; ballast type; and nighttime visibility and reflectivity. It was concluded that plastic barrels generally provide adequate delineation as they are currently utilized in work zones around the state. Although HI sheeting was measureably brighter than EG sheeting, it is not needed to provide adequate visibility. It is also clear that barrels with EG sheeting are able to sustain multiple impacts and remain in service. Scattered problems with dirt accumulation and barrel and sheeting damage were noted. Enforcement of requirements appears adequate. Additional background and cost information is provided in an Appendix.
