This study is concerned with the general problem of transportation development and economic change. Specifically, it examines the development of highway transportation and urban growth in the region of Sao Paulo, Brazil, an area that is undergoing a rapid economic transformation. The objective of the analysis is to investigate, for the period 1940 to 1960, the interrelationships between changes in accessibility to the highway network and the growth of urban centres.
