Power system damping analysis on large power system networks: An entergy case study

While there has been significant research on the data based methods for performing modal analysis on power system networks, the application of such methods on large/practical power systems in an accurate, robust and flexible manner has not received attention. TPL-001-4 standard issued by NERC requires the system to demonstrate sufficient damping for the entire range of planning contingency events. This paper presents a Matrix Pencil and Hankel Total Least Square based Power System Damping Analysis Tool (PSDAT) to evaluate damping on large power system networks. The relatively superior performance of the MP and HTLS approaches is underlined via a comprehensive review and assessment of data-based approaches. The reliability and robustness of the PSDAT is further underlined by applying the same to assess damping for responses for over 2000 dynamic events on the Entergy grid. The PSDAT proposed in this paper provides a unique, reliable and robust damping technique that can be utilized by utilities and/or system operators to comply with NERC damping analysis requirements for off-line planning studies.
