In 1989, the LIA was awarded a National Science Foundation grant of $58,433 to enhance faculty expertise through workshops in lasers and optics. The target faculty were those at primarily undergraduate colleges. The three hands-on workshops were held immediately before the 1989, 1991, and 1991 ICALEO meetings: the first at the Physics Department of the University of Central Florida (UCF); the second at the Electro-Optics Technology Center at Tufts University; the third at San Jose State University. In total, 64 faculty from 61 institutions in 18 states attended. In 1989, the LIA was awarded a National Science Foundation grant of $58,433 to enhance faculty expertise through workshops in lasers and optics.
