Modelling, Simulation and Control of Incremental Sheet Metal Forming Process using CNC Machine Tool

Abstract Incremental sheet forming (ISF) is an advanced metal forming technology. Local progressive deformation of the metal sheet is achieved to get desired shape through ISF. It is gaining popularity in customized production. However, ISF has lower geometric accuracy compared to the conventional sheet metal forming methods such as bending, deep drawing and stamping. The geometric accuracy can be improved by adopting suitable control system strategy in machine tool. Hence this paper deals with the modelling and simulation of ISF CNC machine tool to address this issue. The CNC milling machine model was developed using CAD and kinematics. A mechanistic model was developed by integrating separately developed models of all mechanical and electrical components of CNC machine tool. Cascade control strategies were applied and compared to find the most accurate one. The best control strategy was also validated for ISF using two different symmetric sheet metal CAD models.
