Redundancy insertion of multiple description image coding based on prediction

In view of robust problem of image or video transmission on unreliable networks, a system is based on Multiple description coding method that redundancy in the produced stream can guarantee a useful quality reconstruction in presence of high percentage of packet losses, and it can offer a variety of tradeoff between coding efficiency and transmission robustness. In this paper, a novel pre-processing and post-processing method with flexible redundancy insertion is presented for polyphase downsampling multiple description coding based on prediction without modification to the source codes. Simulation results show the proposed method improves the performances in terms of computational complexity and flexible redundancy insertion in order to make the system robust for any packet loss situation over different networks.
