Vibrational Modes in Ethyl Chloride Measured by Neutron Scattering

Neutron molecular spectroscopy has been used to observe the C–C–Cl deformation and CH3 torsional modes of ethyl chloride in the liquid and solid states. The neutron data for the torsional mode are compared with the results obtained with infrared spectroscopy and Schottky‐barrier tunneling in an attempt to resolve an ambiguity between the intensities of the 0 → 1 and 1 → 2 transitions measured by the latter two techniques.
