High Technology Industry in a Peripheral Area: The Case of Plymouth

This paper presents a profile of high technology industry in Plymouth based upon the results of a postal survey and a series of interviews. Our results suggest that, despite recent growth, Plymouth has not yet created an interlinked high technology sector. The firms in our sample operate in diverse areas, purchase little from the local economy and are concerned about the lack of local suppliers. However, the attractive local environment and the availability of relatively cheap labour are important locational advantages.
