Hardware Security in IoT era: the Role of Measurements and Instrumentation

Broadly, Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm represents an evolving technology which tries to reach its main goal, where each and every ‘thing’ (i.e. device) can be: (i) connected through a network and (ii) controllable from any remote station. Activity sectors like intelligent manufacturing, farms, e-agriculture, real-time traffic controls, environment monitoring, camera security systems, health-care, etc., are going to be governed by the IoT paradigm as backbone in the near future. In this context, ensuring security during ‘thing’ operation and information exchange becomes a critical task. Therefore, secured IoT applies equally to: (i) IoT device-to-device communication, (ii) IoT sensing/actuating, and (iii) IoT information exchange. In this paper, a brief literature survey regarding the research pointing out the Hardware Security (HS) for IoT is presented. Furthermore, in the paper, a short analysis regarding the existing trends for measurements and instrumentation is reported.
