On the role of network synchronization for future cellular networks: an operator's perspective

Synchronization is fundamental for cell acquisition, detection of frame timing, handover, etc., in cellular networks. Focusing on this concept, in this article we begin by explaining the challenges and limitations of already existing synchronization solutions developed and standardized by the IEEE and ITU-T. Moving forward, we propose a novel potential synchronization architecture for future wireless networks. Through this work our aim is to provide a fundamental base, from an operator's perspective, to design, deploy, operate, and optimize synchronization solutions and architectures for the next generation of mobile communication systems.
