Dynamic bandwidth allocation mechanism in EPON with idle time eliminated

Abstract To improve the utilization of bandwidth in EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network), a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed. Logically, all ONUs are divided into two different zones logically. Further, the corresponding scheduling strategies for each zone are designed. As a result, traffic sending and granted can be achieved with the parallel manner by individual ONU in different zone. With our scheduling method, the sending operations of ONUs in different zones are consecutive in time domain, and the idle time can be eliminated effectively. As a result, the system efficiency can be improved. Results show that the performance of uplink throughput is promoted, and the mean delay of uplink traffic is decreased.
