An Approach to Teaching the Design of Electromechanical Devices

The article is concerned with a method for teaching the design of electromechanical devices to undergraduates. The method is based on the concept of realism, using manufacturer's catalogues and ‘experience’ information wherever possible. The design of an electromagnet is described in detail as an illustration of the method.
